Adult Day Centers

What are they?

Adult day centers provide a place for individuals to socialize, exercise, and interact with others. They are generally geared to older adults and offer a variety of programs that are age appropriate and designed to promote independence, self-esteem, and overall life satisfaction. Adult day services are often tailored for individuals with cognitive impairments who might be in need of a safe place to be supervised or assisted in their activities of daily living.

What do they offer?

Adult day centers can provide a variety of mental, physical, and emotional services, which benefit both the individual and their families. Many adult day services offer transportation to and from their center as well as transportation for outside activities that they may offer. They also provide nutritious meals and snacks and can accommodate particular diets (e.g. diabetes). Adult day centers employ trained staff and volunteers who are able to assist with numerous aspects of daily living. For example, toileting, help with eating/drinking, assistance with walking, etc. Adult day centers have structured activities and programs throughout the day, which allow for a comfortable social situation and participation on many levels.

Why are adult day centers helpful?

Adult day centers offer important social stimulation for the patient as well as friendship and a sense of belonging. Furthermore, it offers much needed respite care for the caregiver. Often times, adult day centers can offer information and advice pertaining to particular situations that might be occurring with the patient. Adult day services are beneficial for the overall health of both the patient and the caregiver.
