2011 Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and Primary Progressive Aphasia Caregiver Education and Support Conference

Over 300 people from across the United States, Canada and Ireland attended this year's FTD/PPA Caregiver Conference making it the largest in the event's history. Specifically designed for family caregivers of persons with FTD and PPA, participants were updated on current CNADC research and services followed by two very well-received presentations by Bradley F. Boeve, MD – Professor of Neurology, Mayo Clinic Rochester and Deborah Reed, MD – Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, NUFSM and Neuropsychiatrist with Northwestern's Neurobehavior and Memory Clinic. A panel presentation with Dr.'s Boeve, Reed and three caregiving family members, facilitated by Jaimie Robinson, MSW, rounded out the morning session. Several breakout sessions were offered for families in the afternoon, including Managing Behaviors, Families with Children and Teens, Communication Challenges in PPA, Genetics and FTD/PPA and a support group for persons with PPA. The response to the day was very positive and many expressed gratitude for the valuable information and the opportunity to meet others. As one participant wrote – "(I have a) much better understanding of the disease and what's ahead. We are not alone in this! Thank you".
