Culture Bus: Inside & Out!

The Culture Bus: Inside & Out! is a concept of the Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease Center and CJE SeniorLife. Inspired by a member of the Early Stage Memory Loss Support Group the program, initiated in the Fall of 2002, is designed to take members on cultural excursions throughout the city of Chicago.

In Summer 2007 the Culture Bus expanded to offer both an inside and outside program. The group now meets weekly for ten weeks a session. While there continues to be an outing 5 times a session, we now offer an inside program on alternating weeks.

The Outside Program consists of a 6 1/2 hour day (9:30am-3:00pm) which includes the drive to a cultural destination, such as a museum, botanical garden, planetarium, or historical society. Once there, participants tour the exhibit (usually with a docent), then follow with lunch, a discussion, and return home.

The Inside Program consists of a variety of programs using creative arts, discussions, media presentations and other stimulating experiences as well as lunch. The location is at Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management.

The Culture Bus: Inside & Out! is an innovative way for persons with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease to participate in mentally enriching experiences, share cultural activities with others, enjoy outings, and have opportunities to make new friends.
